Pantoprazole is a potent proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that blocks the final step of gastric acid production. It works by covalently binding to the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme on the surface of gastric parietal cells, thereby inhibiting both basal and stimulated acid secretion. This effect is independent of the stimulus and lasts for over 24 hours.
No specific symptoms have been reported in humans. Pantoprazole is not readily dialyzable. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Panpro is generally well tolerated in both short- and long-term use.
Common side effects: Headache, diarrhea.
Rare effects: Abdominal pain, flatulence, rash, insomnia, and mild hyperglycemia.
Pregnancy: Classified as FDA Pregnancy Category B. Animal studies show no fetal risk, but adequate human studies are lacking. Use only when clearly needed.
Lactation: Excreted in human milk. Weigh potential benefits against possible risks before use during breastfeeding.
Tablets should not be split, crushed, or chewed.
Long-term use may cause vitamin B12 malabsorption or increase risk of osteoporosis-related fractures.
Use caution in patients requiring prolonged acid suppression therapy.
Store in a cool, dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of reach of children.
